The Proper Ways To Install Recessed Lighting Fixtures

electrician-1-300x200.jpgIn most electrical tasks, it is advised to hire an electrician. However, there are some tasks that you could accomplish on your own. This article will shed some light on how to properly install recessed lighting in your home. The process will require certain tools, some understanding of how to restrict the flow of electricity, and how to install lighting fixtures. If you are not confident with such projects, hire an electrician to do the installation. On the other hand, if you wish to proceed, there are specific steps that you need to follow.

Here are the ways to install recessed lighting fixtures:

Step 1: Choosing the housing The first thing that you need to do is to select the type of housing. You can find a few types of recessed lighting housing in the market. They often come rated as “IC” and “Non-IC.” Insulation contact stands for IC. Step 2: Choosing the baffle and trim The baffle and trim are both inserted into the housing to create a more refined look on the ceiling. They hold the rest of the electrical components in place including the lightbulb that will be inserted later on. Step 3: Removal of the old lighting fixture The old lighting fixture must be removed in order to accommodate the new housing. Power leading to the fixture must be cut to avoid any chances of electrocution. Step 4: Getting the exact measurements for the hole A hole must be made to fit the housing. Measurements must be carefully taken and a pattern must be transferred onto the ceiling. It’s best to leave such tasks to a Columbia electrician if not familiar with the process. Step 5: Drilling or cutting the hole You can drill the hole if you have a hole saw that’s the correct size. You can also use a drywall saw as well. This process is a must and is a normal part of installing recessed lighting. Step 6: Attaching the wiring After the hole has been made, the next thing to do is attach the wiring to the housing. Make sure that any instructions that came along with the housing are followed. Step 7: Testing the power Once the wiring has been securely set in place, it’s time for a test run. Turn on the power and use a voltage tester to see if there’s current running in the circuit. Step 8: Set the housing in place After testing for power, secure the housing in the hole. Be sure that it is secure so it won’t fall off. Step 9: Inserting the baffle and trim Once the housing is securely held in place, it’s time to insert the baffle and trim. Make sure any notches or holes line up for a snug fit. Step 10: Installing the lightbulb Once all the components are set in place, it’s time to install the lightbulb. Be sure that the lightbulb is the appropriate size for the fixture you have chosen. Some lights are wider or longer which may protrude if not carefully selected.
